I tried Oreo-flavored Coke Zero

I tried Oreo-flavored Coke Zero. It was meh.

For as much as I talk about fitness and eating right, I admit that I’m still guilty of enjoying a soda here and there. I put in enough work in the gym that I can afford the extra 240 calories that a bottle of Dr. Pepper or a Wild Cherry Pepsi adds.

If I’m on a cut, I’ll switch to diet soda. Everyone cries about that study that links aspartame to cancer, but what most of those alarmists fail to mention is that not only were those studies done on rats, but the amount of aspartame they used was equivalent to drinking 100 cans of soda in one day. Last time I checked, I wasn’t a rat. And I sure as shit ain’t drinking 100 cans of soda in one day. In fact, I don’t think anyone is, because if the 3,000+ mg of caffeine doesn’t stop your heart first, the phosphoric acid will burn a hole in your stomach. Stop exaggerating shit.

Anyway, I was in the mood for a soda, so I went over to the papi store (that’s Philly speak for “bodega”). I’m currently on a cut, so diet soda it was. Because it’s a papi store, the diet selection sucked. So I grabbed the one choice they had, what I thought was Coke Zero. Imagine my surprise as I looked closer at the label and saw an Oreo Cookie logo:

Oreo-flavored Coke Zero

Oreo-flavored Coke Zero? Well okay, I guess I’ll try it.

I did a little bit of research. Apparently Oreo-flavored Coke Zero has been a thing for several months, along with Coke-flavored Oreo Cookies. Goes to show you how much I pay attention.

I cracked the unusual soda and took a sip, not knowing what to expect. How do you make Coke Zero taste like a cream-filled chocolate cookie?

Oreo-flavored Coke Zero doesn’t taste so much like an Oreo Cookie as it does a slightly stronger Vanilla Coke. Maybe there’s supposed to be a hint of chocolate somewhere in there, but I couldn’t taste it, and to be honest I don’t think chocolate would go as well with Coke as vanilla does. It wasn’t bad or anything, it just wasn’t anything special.

I’m not sure who came up with this idea, but it’s kind of stupid. There’s no special emphasis on Oreo’s signature flavor apart from the vanilla cream. I’ll admit, my taste buds aren’t as refined as some, but to me Oreo-flavored Coke Zero tastes just like a stronger Vanilla Coke. If they wanted to sell Vanilla Coke then they should have just sold Vanilla Coke.

People who like Vanilla Coke will probably like this soda, but if you’re looking for a soda that tastes like an Oreo Cookie then don’t bother. There’s absolutely nothing special about Oreo-flavored Coke Zero.
